Asthma Friendly Certification Mark
17 September 2006

Nearly 50 million Americans are affected by asthma and allergies, a sizeable proportion of the consumer market. An Irish company, Allergy Standards Ltd, devised and runs an asthma friendly certification program in conjunction with the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). For Allergy Standards Ltd BFK designed an asthma friendly certification mark that helps consumers recognise products that have been scientifically tested and proven to be suitable for people with asthma and related allergic sensitivities.
Design of the certification mark raised several key issues. It was important that the mark would be impactful and distinctive; that it would work as a tight, cohesive unit; that it would reduce well onto small sizes; and that it would be capable of use in co-branding with the AAFA identity. Above all, the mark needed to communicate clearly that the product that carries it is 'certified'.
The certification process is continually expanding to cover new product areas and the certification mark must reflect this. There are now nine versions of the mark, ranging from a general certification mark to specific marks for soft toys, bedding, pillows, vacuum cleaners, flooring and more.
