Our work for NUI Galway

One of the most important projects we have worked on with BFK has been the development of the NUI Galway brand, this was a key project for the university and BFK have helped us to bring a strong, consistent approach to our brand messages.

Brand perception research, brand strategy consultancy, leading internal values and positioning workshops, and brand architecture have all been part of our many years working with NUI Galway. So too has been creation of the brand identity system itself, design of brand communications, advertising campaigns, environmental graphics, wayfinding and signage systems.

Our engagement began with in-depth research into perceptions of the university and its existing brand.

Then, following workshops with key internal stakeholders, we identified core brand values that reflected the University’s current achievements and future ambitions. These formed the basis for reviewing and revitalising the visual expression of the University’s brand.

We designed a new brand mark to express a more businesslike and efficient positioning. The mark includes a new rationalised name in both Irish and English and an updated symbol based on the university’s distinctive clock tower. While the university retains ‘National University of Ireland Galway’ as its full legal name, we recommended the abbreviated form ‘NUI Galway’ for general usage.

The architecture of the brand identity system reflects the relationship between the many individual colleges of the university and the various research centres operating on campus. To aid consistent long-term implementation of the identity we defined the entire brand identity system in a Brand Book.

With the brand mark at its core, we created a complete brand identity system incorporating a corporate typeface, a suite of colour palettes, and a standardised layout grid for literature.

Among many other NUI Galway projects we developed ‘Real Learning’ as a communications theme to reflect a high standard of teaching and education and the ‘learning by doing’ experience of being a student at the university. This provided a platform for a student recruitment campaign and has been used in the design of exhibition stands, press adverts, posters and promotional literature. We designed a campus wayfinding signage system as well as entrance and interior signage and on-campus environmental graphics for new building projects.

We continue to work with NUI Galway on brand-related projects.
